Ladybug attack

  • Oct. 24th, 2009 at 12:38 PM
me
This past week we've experienced something I've never encountered before - our whole house was attacked by ladybugs! And when I say attacked, I mean more than 100,000 ladybugs descended on our house out of nowhere practically. I have never seen so many ladybugs in one place! They were all different colors - yellow, orange, red, some with spots, some without. Every afternoon they would cover the house and try to get into every door and window (even when they are closed). My husband and I have collected hundreds of them inside and even posted them on freecycle for those "unlucky" people who don't have them in their house, but maybe have aphids in their gardens (since ladybugs eat aphids).  Several people actually contacted us and came over here to claim a couple of hundreds lady bugs each.

I posted that I was super-frustrated about this on my facebook status update, and a few people mentioned that their houses have also experienced ladybug attacks. Well, at least I am not alone in this. Not that it makes it any better. It's raining outside today, and I am hoping that it would prevent them from coming out again today or in the future (well, at least until spring). We'll see...

me
Well, this time of year is upon us again... Time to pick your own fresh fruit and berries! This past Saturday we went to Lyman Orchards' Strawberry Festival, which was a lot of fun for Edward. We also couldn't pass up on picking some strawberries while we were there. Although with all of these cold rainy days strawberries were not very good, very few and far between. But Saturday was a nice hot day, so there were crowds everywhere enjoying the weather :) We got only just enough strawberries to make a few strawberry shortcakes upon our return home.

Last week it was so hot outside, kids were happy for some water play. Our wonderful friend Amy hosted our play-date at her house and set up a sprinkler for the kids. Even though some of them were a little skeptical at first, no one wanted to miss out on the fun, so everyone (including Sophie dog) eventually joined in!

Yesterday our church held its annual Children's Ministry Volunteer Appreciation Dinner. My husband and I have been involved in the children's ministries by volunteering in the nursery and toddler room on a rotational basis as well as Sports Camp last summer. I was very honored to be asked to photograph this special event. It was a lot of fun!

Everything was set up and decorated so beautifully for the dinner. The theme was "young at heart". For entertainment we had "Twilight Tappers" from Hamden/North Haven area (you can see some photos and videos of them dancing under the cut). Thank you to all who worked so hard on planning and preparing this dinner, your labor of love was very much appreciated by all of us!

St. Patrick's Day Parade tradition was started in New Haven, CT on March 17, 1842, and since the mid-50s of the 20th century this parade has become one of New England's premier Irish events. This parade is the 6th oldest parade of this kind in the nation, and is the largest single-day spectator event in the State of Connecticut (it draws crowds of nearly 200,000 people!) Click on the parade's official website to find out more information. Here are some of my favorite photos from today's parade.

Can't wait for spring!

me
Is everyone else getting their spring fever? I know I am. Although it is truly beautiful outside with fresh piles of snow and sun reflecting from our iced-up creek in the backyard, I can't help but miss these pretty flowers of spring. I can't wait for the tulips, daffodils, lilies, crocuses and other pretty spring flowers we planted this year to come up and dress up our yard with their cheerful blooms. I can't wait for it to be warm again, too :)

And for now I leave you with this photo taken at our old house last spring...

Learning and building at Lowe's

Edward building a jewelry box at Lowe's Build and Grow Clinic
February 14, 2009

Lowe's has a wonderful woodworking workshop for children – "Lowe's Build and Grow Clinics". They hold them about twice a month, and Edward was one happy child attending the last two workshops. On Valentine’s Day he got to build a jewelry box, complete with mirror inside and a bright red heart to open and close it. Lowe's gives a cute little kit for each project to an attending child, complete with all wooden parts already cut out, pre-drilled holes, nails and detailed instructions. Each child also gets an apron and safety goggles (that they get to keep, although they are encouraged to bring them back for the next project), and a child-sized real claw hammer to complete the project.  Upon completion, children can show their work to a Lowe's associate supervising the workshop and get an "I built it" certificate and a patch for that specific project to be sewn on their aprons.

This last Saturday in February we went again, this time with our friends Frank and Amy and their children Caroline and Frankie. All 3 kids loved building their own race cars. That was pretty much the only toy they wanted to play with for the rest of the day. They were so proud of the cars they built themselves! We are certainly going to the next couple of projects – the next one is a table-top basketball game and the one after that is a yard mobile. Sounds like fun and, in my opinion, these kind of projects give children valuable skills for working with wood later on as well as a lot of in-the-moment excitement and thrill of making a beautiful finished project that is a step up from a coloring page or a play-dough experiment.

If you have small children, I would certainly recommend these workshops. So sign up and attend!

January Ice Storms

  • Feb. 3rd, 2009 at 8:36 PM
me
We've had two major ice storms here in Connecticut this January. Although on the day of the storm tree branches look pretty, when winds pick up during the night, it becomes quite loud to sleep. Falling ice from the branches hitting the roof is not super fun to listen to. But when the sun comes up next morning the sight of the ice on the tree branches is beautiful again...

During the first January ice storm. A lot of the trees were completely hunched over under the weight of all the ice:

Fall days in CT

me
If you haven't been to New England in the fall, you are missing out. It's truly a delight for all of your senses. If you like the sound of shuffling leaves, beautiful colors of orange, yellow, red, green and brown all mixed together in a gorgeous sight of the fall trees, smell of the hot apple cider bubbling in a slow cooker, taste of tart apples coming fresh from the orchard and a feel of pumpkins, all nice and smooth freshly picked from the pumpkin patch or prickly hay, piled up in neat stacks, you have got to visit New England in the fall.

We had wonderful time this fall visiting Lyman Orchards and Ives Farm this fall. It's been beautiful and warm, so we were able to enjoy the weather and soak up everything that fall has to offer.

Picture of the week

  • Jun. 27th, 2008 at 10:18 PM
photography
One of the pictures I took of the magnificent "Gates of the Mountains" during one of our Montana trips is being used as the "Picture of the Week" by Earth Science Teacher at Helena High School Rod Benson over here: http://formontana.net/gates.html The photo was taken from Upper Holter Lake (part of the Missouri River; 20 miles north of Helena, Montana). The reason for the name is the optical illusion (visible from a boat as you take it down the river). As you go through the canyon from a certain angle the mountains look closed, and as you start moving along the river and turning a little, they start to open. Hence "Gates of the Mountains".

Gates of the Mountains is such a beautiful place, and every time we visit it reminds us of its historical significance from the times of the Lewis and Clark expedition. As this site puts it:

"At the point where the plains surrounding Great Falls gave way to mountain foothills, the [Lewis and Clark] expedition again took to the river. They passed Square Butte, which they named Fort Mountain, and entered canyon lands... The three-mile long river passage, now a reservoir, cut through 1200-foot high cliffs. Lewis' journal of July 19, 1805, describes the passage and the optical illusions common to travelers: "the towering and projecting rocks in many places seem ready to tumble in on us…this rock is a black granite below and appears to be of a much lighter color above. This extraordinary range of rocks we called the Gates of the Rocky Mountains."  "…the rocks approach the river on both sides, forming a most sublime and extraordinary spectacle. Nothing can be imagined more tremendous than the frowning darkness of these rocks, which project over the river and menace us with destruction."

Last Sunday we went to our annual neighborhood picnic. They again had a firetruck there, and this year Edward enjoyed it so much more. He loved looking at the huge tires, shiny surfaces and he even got a Jr. firefighter's helmet. There were 4 firefighters there who saw me taking all the pictures and they were admiring our camera. They wanted me to take a picture of them and give it to them later. I did take a few pictures of them with their new truck which they were very proud of. Then I framed a picture and took it down to the firehouse personally. They do public service and I very much respect that! They were so happy to get it :) Now it's decorating one of the walls of the Westville firehouse.
